Introduction

Photographing is seeing: seeing is not understanding

A universal practice, photography suffers from its own ubiquity. We are all producers and consumers of images, even more so in the digital age. The common nature of the practice tends to hide its complexity. Photography is, in essence, an opaque phenomenon that can only be approached by taking all of its elements into account: technical, sociological, industrial, anthropological, historical or artistic.

Cultural activities

Beyond simple contemplation, the stance and educational take developed at the musée Niépce aim to reveal the multiple facets of this complex medium. The museum, through its expertise, its critical eye on the history of the medium and its involvement in current work, enables one to explore the « photographic », from the gesture to the result, the man to the machine, the production to the display, the origins to the contemporaneousness of images.

Questioning one’s relationship to photography, the history and the current state of the image

An active and participative approach enables one to discover the collections and exhibitions in groups or individually :
- Guided tours are available every day but must be booked in advance through the Public relations department. A programme of the themed guided tours for the public is available in our « Agenda » section.
- Workshops for younger visitors enable them to discover, approach and understand an aspect of photography through reading images, handling material and taking shots.
- Regular events with photographers and artists keep visitors in permanent contact with the artists working today. The programme for these encounters, conferences, screenings, is available in the « Agenda » section.

National events such as the « Journées Européennes du Patrimoine » and the « Nuit des musées » invite visitors to see the museum from another angle. Enjoy collections on show exceptionally, demonstrations of skills, and take part in the numerous events available.

By reaching out to the public, the musée Nicéphore Niépce also develops projects outside the museum. Built around showing the collections and/or photography practice, they can take on innovative forms. Impromptu urban interventions bring another angle to current affairs, in the atypical way the collections are shown.

Educational activities

Faced with the continual flow of images that students are confronted with every day, both at home and in school, the question of educating them to see images has never been more crucial. The question suffers from an alienating paradox between its imperious presence and a feeling of resignation faced with such complexity. Students deal with images daily (portable phones, digital cameras, webcams…) without mastering the incidences and sometimes the consequences.

The photography museum, through its expertise, its critical eye on the history of the medium and its involvement in current affairs can provide the distance necessary to reflect on images that are omnipresent and far-reaching.
The musée Nicéphore Niépce thus constitutes a frame of reference that enables a direct confrontation with the tools for capturing and the images produced.

Acquiring the references necessary to understanding the world of the image

Activities and actions adapted to all publics and all age groups are available.

Guided tours enable visitors to discover the collections and temporary exhibitions in an active manner associating their exposure to the originals on display with new technologies. This discovery can cover the whole museum or be a more in-depth experience on a particular theme.

The workshop/tours encourage our younger visitors to understand the collections and what’s happening with images today through observation and practical activities. Educational dossiers that cover the temporary exhibitions are available online and can help when preparing a visit.

Educational exhibitions and materials can also be borrowed for a more in-depth examination in class.

The public relations department is at your disposal to put together and run made-to-measure educational projects.
